Our Friends over at 4K London have put together this amazing video descibing what the role of a DIT to give everyone on set a better understanding of what it is the DIT does:

DIT - Digital Imaging Technician

What is a DIT and what do we do

The DIT is the camera department crew member who works in collaboration with the DOP (Director of Photography) and the Post house, in regards to workflow, systemization, camera settings, signal integrity and image manipulation.

The goal is to achieve the highest image quality and creative goals of cinematography in the digital realm.

The DIT's role on-set has become especially prevalent through assisting cinematographers - normally accustomed to film stock - in achieving their desired look digitally.
This is accomplished by the DIT creating "look up tables" (LUTs) with the DOP, monitoring picture exposure, adjusting the color and Luminence levels on set through a process called "Live-Grading”. Then the information of this Live Grade is sent in what is known as Color Decision Lists (CDL's) on a daily basis to post-production.

Additionally, the DIT deals with settings in the digital camera's menu system, such as recording format and outputs.
